Kusadasi… the great fire of 2006

After an extremely early wake up on the docks of Samos, we proceeded to exit the EU and enter a land of frugal intrigue.

It only took about an hour to reach Turkey from Greece, but it seemed to be a world away. Instead of the mighty Gyros which had become an integral part of our diets, we were now faced with the world of kebabs.

Kusadasi was memorable for a number of reasons. First, it was where I had my first fast food on tour – Burger King. Second, we were overcharged for our visas (€20 instead of US$20). Third, there was a huge bush fire only about 10km from our hostel and we were awoken to the sounds of planes flying over our heads.

Despite the potentially life threatening bush fire, the locals did not seem too phased and naturally, we carried on with our daily tanning activities without much hassle. One good thing about the hostel we stayed in (Stella’s) was that it had a basketball court and I was able to get in some much needed exercise and attempt to curb the blowout due to the excessive amounts of food and beverage consumed in Greece.

After only one night in Kusadasi, we commenced our stint on the Fez Bus. Naturally, I cringe at the thought of a packaged tour, but there are both benefits and drawbacks. On one hand, you don’t have to think. It really is travelling for dummies. Just like high school English class with Mr Hillman, we were spoon fed everything. But on the other hand, you have to meet and tolerate some absolutely pathetic human beings.
