Ios… where the party never stops

Next stop was Ios, which can only be described by the words “Groundhog Day”. Each day, or rather night, was nearly identical to the previous. A standard day would include crawling out of bed as close to 2pm as possible to ensure that breakfast was available – usually a filthy ham, cheese and tomato toastie washed down with some freshly squeezed orange juice. Note, the orange juice was probably about the only bit of goodness in the Ios diet. This was followed by an extreme tanning session at one of the many beaches. Unfortunately the most stunning beach, Manganari, was located on the other side of the island and required motivation and an early rising to make one of the few buses which travelled there. Keck and I managed to make it out there only once as we were usually not mentally or physically capable of making it anywhere before 3pm. The main beach, Mylopotas, was pretty filthy, but had a plethora of watersports on hand. A highlight was the “Flying Banana”, which was essentially a big raft with flaps on the front, so that when you were travelling at speed and pulled back on the reins, the craft would lift 5-10 metres in the air for 5 or so seconds at a time. Brilliant.

Following the daily sun session, we headed back to the hostel for a quick kip and then headed out for dinner, which varied from Mexican to Thai to Italian to kebabs. Then the day really began. A beer or two at the hostel, followed by cocktails at Blue Note, which were only €6 for 2. The drink of choice was “Sex on the Beach” and things seemed to escalate quite quickly. Then we headed to a club, usually Rehab, and proceeded to ply ourselves with copious amounts of Jaeger bombs, Flaming Lamborghinis and Purple Rain. I have no idea what the last drink is, but it seemed to induce unpleasant feelings in my stomach. Needless to say, it got a little messy and this usually culminating in some rude dance manoeveurs. Only the camera knows what happens between the hours of 2 and 4am. The night usually ended with a fitting visit to the kebab shop – George’s.

Multiply that experience by six days and you’ve summed up Ios. Needless to say we were all not in the best shape and very much in need of some rehabilitation. Enter Santorini.
